by Jay Foster, Mississippi Trucking Accident Attorney

In America, 4,986 people died in this wrecks which was 12% of all traffic deaths and another 122,000 were injured. Many attorneys think a trucking wrecks is just another car wreck. Let me assure you that it is not. A lawyer handling these cases must be familiar with a number of different areas, including (a) the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations; (b) satellite and other technologies in use in trucks; and, (c) questions regarding insurance coverage.

In 1935, the government passed the Motor Carrier Act which created the Interstate Commerce Commission. The Interstate Commerce Commission, or "ICC", formulated the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations. Of course, these regulations are for our safety on the roads and highways as they are specifically geared towards trucks and buses. As a result, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations are regulations which assist us in reducing and preventing truck and bus wrecks, deaths, and injuries. These regulations help do this by requiring truck and bus drivers to have one commercial motor vehicle driver's license and if a truck driver operates a truck in an unsafe manner, the regulations require his or her suspension.
