Why I Hate Suits

I know I’m wearing a suit in the picture but the truth is I HATE suits.

It’s about 1000 degrees on the Coast in the summer so most of the time I wear jeans and a t-shirt to work.

So why did I use that picture?

I don’t know.

I guess I’m trying to impress people by wearing a suit so you’ll think I’m professional and can do my job.

But, the truth is I do my job better in jeans. It’s more comfortable.

So if you’re looking for a lawyer that wears suits every day to work, I’m not the lawyer for you.

Yes, I’ll wear a suit if we have to go to Court BUT let’s hope you don’t need a lawyer, and if you do need a lawyer, let’s hope we don’t have to go to Court.

From Picking Shrimp At 3:30 In The Morning To Legal Crusader

If you really want to know about me, you need to know that I’m just a simple shrimp picker from Biloxi.

I graduated from Biloxi High School.

You need to know that I’m a shrimp picker because I wouldn’t be a lawyer without being a shrimp picker first.

My Momma wanted to teach me the value of hard work.

So she made me get a job at the Biloxi Shrimp Factory.

It was my very first job.

I would wake up at about 3:00 a.m. to get to the shrimp factory at 3:30 a.m.

The shrimp factory I was working at was right about where the Grand Casino built their grassy park on the beach in Biloxi.

If I was late, I got fired.

If I got fired, my Momma would “jerk a knot” in me.

That’s her way of saying the belt was coming.

So what did I learn?

I learned exactly what my Momma wanted me to learn: what hard work really is.

Why I Became A Lawyer, And Why It Had Nothing To Do With Money

I Grew Up In Hell

I used to be really embarrassed to tell you what I’m about to tell you.

I was raised to hide what was happening at home.

I’m still embarrassed but I’ve learned it helps me become a better person.

So if you really want to know about me, you need to know that I grew up in Hell.

My Daddy beat the crap out of my Momma.

And then when my Momma divorced him, she married another drunken idiot who also beat the Hell out of her.

Broken chairs, glasses, plates, lamps, etc., was a regular routine in my house.

I don’t know how I managed to come out of that sane, except for my Mom – she kept me focused on going to college.

I still have nightmares.

I have 5 sisters and we didn’t have a lot of money.

And in case, you are wondering, my drunken Daddy never paid anything and my wife-beating idiot Step-Dad wasn’t any better so my Step-Dad wouldn’t give any of us 1 penny.

I knew growing up early on that I didn’t want to be poor like that.

My Momma felt trapped I think a little bit by her financial situation.

After seeing all the insane things that went on in my house growing up, I knew I never wanted anyone to control me financially.

I was going to run my own business no matter what it took so I didn’t have to rely on anyone.

I knew I never wanted my kids to grow up like that.

So why’d I become a lawyer?

You’ll probably think this is stupid but I can remember reading a book about President John Adams when I was in 4th grade and I learned he was a lawyer and a really good one.

President Adams had the guts to stand up for people even when it was wildly unpopular.

If you don’t know, he was the lawyer who defended the British troops in the Boston Massacre.

We don’t have a lot of people who will do that today.

People just don’t have the guts.

Most people are scared about what the media will say or what some silly internet warrior on social media will say or some other silly nonsense.

I was hooked by that book and I wanted to be a lawyer ever since.

And I wanted to help people like my Momma more than anything.

I thought lawyers could do that.

I try to do that today.

And I’m the first in 3 generations on my Momma and Daddy’s side of the family to NOT beat the Hell out of my wife.

I’m proud of that.

Married?  Family?

So marriage and family?

Yes!

The Super Bowl with the Saints and my family!!! My life long dream!!

College? I Was Broke

So where did I go to college?

My kids and my wife at the Super Bowl!!! And yes, I put this picture on here twice on purpose.

I went to college at Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Why?

Because I’m a nut about the New Orleans Saints.

Yes, you read that right, I went to college in New Orleans because I love the Saints so much.

That was back when people would leave Saints tickets under their windshield wiper and the tickets would still be there when they got back after the game.

I got a scholarship at Tulane but that didn’t include food or the ability to do much of anything so I worked my way through school to support myself.

The truth is, I was poor as heck and felt out of place with the rich college kids who had tons of money to spend.

I’ve never forgotten my freshman year of college when the guys on our dorm room floor were ordering food to be delivered from a restaurant.

A guy on our dorm room floor said, “Jay can’t afford the food.”

I’ve never forgotten him and what he said.

And I’ve never forgotten that I went back in my dorm room while they ordered food and ate.

It was true what he said. . .but it embarrassed the heck out of me.

The truth is what he said even motivated me even more not to be poor.

I remember calling my Momma and asking her about it.

She said, “Use it as motivation.”

So I did.

So during college, I survived on Ramen Noodles.

I couldn’t afford much else because I was broke.

To this day, I don’t go down the grocery aisle where they have Ramen Noodles.  It makes me sick.

Where I Went To Law School And Why It Was A Waste Of Time

Law School?

I went to law school at Mississippi College School of Law in Jackson, Mississippi.

I had a scholarship to Ole Miss Law School but there were two problems with that:

1.  My future wife was at USM and didn’t want me to go that far from her and I didn’t want to go that far from her either.

2.  I’m a Coast boy and I just love everything about the Coast and I didn’t like the idea of being that far from home.

So, I took out a ton of loans and worked my way through law school also.

I’m so grateful to my Momma for teaching me the value of hard work because that’s what enabled me to get through those tough times when I didn’t have two nickels.

I WOULDN’T BE WHERE I’M AT HAD MY MOMMA NOT TAUGHT ME THE VALUE OF HARD WORK.

I try to pass that on to my kids so they know the value of hard work.

If I do nothing else with my kids, I want to teach them that lesson.

In case you are wondering, law school is a COMPLETE WASTE OF TIME.

They don’t teach you anything worthwhile in law school.

I had one class that was taught by a Judge and that was the only class that I actually learned anything that I could use as a lawyer.

I don’t think lawyers should have to go to law school at all, an internship for a year or so with a lawyer would be better.

When I was in law school I interned with former Circuit Court Judge James E. Thomas.  As an intern, I helped Judge Thomas in preparation for multiple trials and motions ranging from Mississippi car wrecks to Mississippi residents injured on the job.

I was a law clerk for him BEFORE Judges even had law clerks in this State.

So how did I get that job?  Because there wasn’t actually any job at all.

Same way.

Values taught to me by my Momma.

I just showed up at Judge Thomas’ Office and told him I’d work for free.

He asked me if I was “****** nuts.”

And if you knew Judge Thomas, you know he threw in that curse word in asking me that question.

I got to the Courthouse so early that he had to give me a key to the Courthouse.

I learned from my Momma that you lead by example and show your boss that you will out-work him and everyone else in the building.

And I did exactly that.

And I never left early and I never left before he did (unless he made me leave – which he did a few times).

The only people there at the Courthouse before me was the 911 operators from the night shift.

I worked my rear-end off for him.

At the end of the summer, he felt sorry for me and gave me some money.

It didn’t matter to me if it was $10.

I was incredibly proud of the fact that I EARNED that money.

Mississippi Supreme Court & Mississippi Appellate Court

After graduating law school, I accepted a Judicial Clerkship with Justice James Roberts of the Mississippi Supreme Court.

As a Judicial Clerk, I assisted Justice Roberts in numerous appeals involving all types of issues raised at the trial court level.

After completing my clerkship with Justice Roberts, I accepted a Judicial Clerkship with Presiding Judge James E. Thomas on the Mississippi Court of Appeals.

Yes, the same Judge Thomas who was a Circuit Court Judge that I worked for free for.

He ran for Judge for the Appellate Court and was voted into office.

The truth is he ran for the Mississippi Appellate Court because he couldn’t stand the Senior Presiding Judge who he felt was lazy and didn’t do his job right and wasn’t very smart.

So off to the Mississippi Appellate Court I went.

The experience on the Appellate Court as a Judicial Clerk was similar to the Supreme Court as countless issues raised at the trial court level were decided.

Judge Thomas was my friend and my mentor.

He died years ago.

He was human like we all are and had his faults.  He abused his body with smoking and alcohol.

But he was BRILLIANT.

I still miss him to this day.

God, how I wish I could ask him a question every day about problems I’m having in trying to help people with the legal cases and how aggravating lawyers can be.  I get so tired of lawyers lying all the time.

After that, I worked for various law firms in Mississippi which specialized in injuries and litigation.

I’ve worked on my own for decades now.

I’m the Past President, Past Vice-President, and Past Secretary of the Coast Business Leaders Association.

The motto of the Coast Business Leaders Association is “Preserving the Past. . .Ensuring the Future.”  The Association is comprised of professionals in a wide variety of fields and has raised and donated funds to several youth shelters, the Boy Scouts, adoption services, and the Boys and Girls Club.
